Jim is working with a group of NOAA’s archaeologists and other scientists during the December 2016 expedition aboard NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer, called “Shakedown, Calibration, and Testing in the Main Hawaiian Islands” in order to be prepared for the 2017 expedition season.

“On the morning of December 7th, 75 years to the minute, we will be diving to examine the Japanese midget submarine sunk prior to the aerial attack by the vigilant crew of USS Ward and sharing our exploration of the first shot fired at Pearl Harbor at the wreck of the sub, 1100 feet down,” says Jim.

One of the most peculiar naval vessels employed in the battle of Pearl Harbor is the Japanese midget submarine. One such vessel, manned by Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki, failed in its mission to attack and destroy American warships.
